Local Marathons are done and dusted; congratulations to the Protea Team selected for the World Marathon Championships in Croatia in September, including Christie who will be racing K1 and K2 and Clint who will be racing the Short Course. Good luck to all selected; and it will be particularly interesting to follow Andy and Hamish through the Olympic Sprints and then into Marathons. Congratulations also to Rob Crichton and his team for all the work that went into what was ultimately a very successful 10 weeks of marathon racing culminating in the SA Champs at Roodeplaat.

Rob went down to KZN and claimed 3rd place in the tough 46km Scottburgh to Brighton marathon with the junior Jayden Jansen van Rensburg. Well done to Roberto, our only Navy representative! This is SA’s second oldest surfski race, one that the local sea-dogs cherish, so this was a big win for Jayden and Rob who had never paddled together before. Staying down in Durban, it’s the SA Surfski Champs in two weeks; which like the Marathon Champs will be used to select the team to represent South Africa at the ICF Ocean Racing World Championships. Good luck to our Navy paddlers!

This week it’s the iconic Berg River Marathon, where we have several contenders across the age categories. Top of our racing snakes are Clint and Siseko, both who would love a Berg win. How fast will Phineas be? Also racing will be the U23 Berg novices, Wonga and Ethan. But will they be able to beat our most experienced Dabs berg paddler, Monty Monteith, and will this Great Grand Master of 27 Bergs be able to beat the younger Master, Robbie Herreveld? Will Colin Wilson win the Grand Masters, will Chuck be able to beat Ryno, will Karen win her field? Then there’s Matthew, who with 14 Bergs to his name, knows the way home and would provide a fine wave and good company for Berg novices Daniel and Craig. (Two different Dabs guys, not the 007 guy). None of the recent winners (Hank, Andy, Hamish, Tyron) appear to be entered, but Jeremy Maher and Thomas Lovemore who came second and third respectively last year are in, so they might be happy that the likes of Hank and Andy aren’t in the mix, but here’s to winners from our pond! Good luck to all from Emmarentia.

Don’t forget it’s the Dabs Winter Time Trial Series, sponsored by Derekane, KZNR and Ineos where you need to do 8 Thursday Night Time Trials before the end of August to score an awesome Puffer Jacket, so there’s still time to score one for yourself!

Go Dabs!
