Vaal River Marathon: A Paddle-Infused Adventure on South Africa’s Iconic Waterway
Gauteng Province, South Africa — Get ready for two exhilarating days of river paddling, down the iconic Vaal River as the ADG Vaal River Marathon returns on November 18th and 19th, 2023. This historic canoe race, one of South Africa’s oldest, promises an unforgettable experience for participants and spectators.
The ADG Vaal River Marathon offers a unique opportunity to traverse the scenic beauty of the Vaal River over a challenging two-day course. Paddlers from all corners of South Africa will gather to take part in this official Dusi Canoe Marathon Seeding race. The event’s rich history and breathtaking course make it a must-attend event, for both seasoned paddlers and newcomers alike.
Expect to see some of South Africa’s top paddlers like former race winner Clint Cook and World Marathon Championships representative Wayne Jacobs, showcasing their skills on the river. Race Director, Elandrie Zietsman, has expressed her excitement, stating, “We’re thrilled to be involved in this year’s event, and the energy levels are building rapidly. We have many exciting additions to bring to the paddlers this year, making it a unique paddling experience. We welcome everyone to join in the action in what is set to be something rather special.”
While the Vaal River Marathon promises breathtaking scenery, paddlers should be prepared to tackle technical sections, especially if the river level is low.

- Start: Vaal Dam Wall, on November 18th, 2023, at 08:30 AM
- Finish: Albatross Ski Boat Club, Three Rivers
Day 2:
- Start: Eden Manor Below Barrage, on November 19th, 2023, at 08:00 AM
- Finish: Umfula Lodge
