Gauteng Province, South Africa — The stage is set for an intense battle on the tranquil yet challenging waters of the Vaal River as top paddlers Wayne Jacobs and Clint Cook gear up for the ADG Vaal River Marathon on the 18th and 19th November . With their eyes on victory, both athletes and their partners are poised to make a splash at one of South Africa’s most prestigious canoeing events.

A seasoned paddler, double Umko winner and South African representative at the World Marathon Championships this year, Wayne Jacobs is no stranger to the competitive world of canoe racing. Expressing his anticipation for this year’s Vaal River Marathon, Wayne shared his thoughts: “I am really looking forward to this year’s Vaal as a good way to wrap up a busy year of paddling, at one of our home races. Dabulamanzi and JCC have secured some amazing sponsorship from ADG and always put on a well-organised and fun event.”

Wayne continued, “The last couple of years’ races have seen great water levels and a good turnout of competitive crews, as they try to secure a good seeding for Dusi. This year I will be racing it with Rob Crichton. Rob and I trained and did a few of the pre-Dusi races together in 2021, and we went really well and enjoyed paddling together. We were always keen to team up for the next K2 year.”

Wayne emphasised the competition, saying, “We are expecting some fast crews for this year’s Vaal, so we are not putting any pressure on ourselves at this stage and will just be looking to use it as a good start to our training towards the Dusi in February next year.”

For Clint Cook, former K1 race winner, the Vaal River Marathon holds a special place in his heart. As a home event, it carries a sense of prestige and challenge. “The Vaal is a home event, and for me, it’s a prestigious race to win. I love this race, which is a test of river skills and with long stretches of flat water, it tests your marathon skills if there are bunches. It’s an honest race and comes down to who has done the training,” Cook said.

He continued, “It’s an iconic race, and one I’ve always aimed to win.” Clint Cook’s dedication to mastering the waters of the ADG Vaal River is bound to make this year’s race an unforgettable showdown. Cook will be partnering with SA Junior paddler Luke Salmon.

The ADG Vaal River Marathon promises to be an exhilarating display of paddling prowess, as these top athletes, along with other competitive crews, aim to conquer the river and secure their place in the annals of canoeing history.
