Two months ago, the Morning School crew put up a Memorial Bell in the clubhouse, in honour of Mark Feather and all our paddling friends who have passed on. This past Thursday evening, the bell was rung for the first time since then – for Brian Jordan. Giles Walkey, not known for public speaking, shared a short but heartfelt tribute. He spoke of Jordy’s athleticism; 27 Dusi Canoe Marathons and 23 Comrades Marathons, including 11 silver medals; and his love for life, the ever-present smile on his face, and the countless stories he had to tell. Rest in peace, Jordy.
Steve then retrieved his microphone to acknowledge some of the up and coming athletes from our dam. Rio Hao was recognised for his outstanding performance at the 2025 China Canoe U-Series League, where he won 3 Gold medals in the 200m, 500m, and 1000m events. SCARC paddlers Kyle Armdorf and Nhlamulo Mahwayi, along with their coach Nkosi, were also congratulated for their impressive achievements at the 2025 International President’s Cup Regatta in Azerbaijan, where Kyle won 2 Gold K1 medals, making his dad feel twice as tall. Well done guys.
Then there was more time on the mic for Steve as he thanked Allen Needham from Solasafe for once again supporting our sport and sponsoring the Solasafe Mixed Doubles League. Alexa Godden and Brad Boulle claimed 1st place ahead of Carol and Bevan Manson followed by Gabriella van Rooyen and Rob Crichton in 3rd Place while Kyle and Aara claimed 1st place in the Juniors. Thanks to Solasafe for the prizes and the trophy which will be awarded at the end of the League. Brad did a runner, so his prize went to some other guy.
Saturday saw the running of the VLC K2 Marathon, on a sunny but fresh morning. With 21km and 10km options, there were also the Norman No Friends who paddled their K1s, just to mix things up. Dabs was well represented at the sharp end with Brad & Jack taking first place ahead of MJ & Rob, with Garden & Matt taking third place (although Luke did beat them in his K1). Renschi did way better than Matt and stood on the top step – but not with Emma, because she like Brad couldn’t stay for prizegiving. Kyle however stayed and was on the top step of a podium once again, as was Rio. Further back, Ryno and Leon were seen bullying SCARC juniors. Barrow Jnr and Flem Dog were seen out there too, and it would seem that Richard was found a guy to paddle with, although we are not sure if Gunther will keep him or not. Well done to all from Dabs who were out there.
New news. Franklyn J Roosevelt Primary just had a truly special school assembly to celebrate Kyle’s gold Medals for SA at the President’s Cup. The SABC, press, Dept of Education and Family were invited to celebrate with the entire school. It was an amazing morning of celebration. Champion Kyle!
In other news, Moolies Moolman had a brain tumor removed last week. Our reporters say he is alive and well, that he caused too much kak, and they kicked him out the hospital. So, situation normal, but we have been warned that his wiring may be a little more scrambled than it previously was, so please spare a thought for poor Bronwen….
Next up its K1 Marathons at Centurion on Saturday – Go Dabs!
